Welcome to Taishu-engeki!!

Taishu-engeki

What is Taishu-engeki?

Taishu Engeki is a style of Japanese theater that focuses on entertainment, known for its flashy performances and dramatic flair.

It originally evolved from Kabuki and became hugely popular about 100 years ago. Unlike Kabuki, Taishu Engeki is often performed by family-run troupes who travel from theater to theater, changing locations every month. One of its biggest attractions is the way it blends traditional Japanese culture with modern trends, creating shows that are both nostalgic and fresh.

What is Naniwa-Club?

Naniwa-club is a theater of Taishu engeki.

Naniwa-club has been a hall of fame for Taishu-engeki since 1955.
In this theater, you can see traditional Japanese dances, music, costumes, and more.
For just 1,000 yen, you can experience Japanese culture far beyond what Kyoto offers.

About

A typical Taishu Engeki performance has two parts: a dramatic play and a lively dance show.

The plays change daily and feature classic Japanese characters like geisha, samurai, warriors, and courtesans. The dance shows are colorful and fun, with performers using props like swords, umbrellas, and folding fans—often set to catchy Japanese pop (J-pop) music. This mix of tradition and modern style creates a unique, entertaining experience that visitors from all over the world can enjoy.
